Daniel and Armin are arrested. While in the jail cell, they swear an oath of blood brother hood, and they cut their wrists with a dirty glass shard.
After painting the swastika, they hear the Red Front marching towards them. Daniel drags them into a ditch, but Armin insists on yelling at the Soviets. The Soviets find Armin and try to beat him up. Armin sprains his ankle, and Daniel pulls him away from the Soviets, until they are collected by the police.
Daniel Half Human by David Chotjewitz takes place in Germany, 1933. Daniel, 13, and Armin, his best friend wander the streets of a Soviet-occupied town, looking for a place to paint a swastika.
